One of the most frequently asked questions from our clients is: "Can you install flooring on a balcony without drilling?". Behind this question lie several concerns - about damaging waterproofing, noise during installation, and issues with the building management.

Why drilling into a balcony is a problem

To understand the benefits of drill-free installation, you first need to know what lies beneath the balcony surface and why you should not interfere with it.

The waterproofing layer

Beneath the tiles or screed on a balcony, there is a waterproofing layer - a membrane or coating that protects the concrete structure from water. Every hole drilled into the surface pierces this layer. Even if the hole is sealed, over the years the seal can degrade and water will begin seeping into the concrete. The consequences?

• Corrosion of the reinforcement in the balcony slab
• Water stains on the ceiling of the neighbour below
• Peeling plaster and mould on the underside of the balcony
• In extreme cases - weakening of the balcony structure

Repairing damaged waterproofing costs several thousand zlotys and requires tearing up the entire floor. It is far cheaper simply not to drill.

Building management approval

In many multi-family buildings, the balcony is considered common property - even if only the flat owner uses it. Housing associations often require written consent for any work that interferes with the structure, and drilling into the balcony surface qualifies.

Tape-based installation bypasses this problem entirely - you are not interfering with the structure, not making permanent changes, and do not need approval.

Noise and disruption

Drilling into concrete with a hammer drill generates 80 - 100 dB of noise - comparable to a car horn. In an apartment building, that is a guaranteed conflict with neighbours, especially if the installation takes several hours.

How tape-based installation works - the technical details

Pillar 1: Mounting tape

This is not ordinary adhesive tape from a DIY store. We use professional double-sided tape with high adhesion strength, designed for outdoor applications. Its specifications:

• Adhesion strength: several dozen kilograms per linear metre - many times more than needed to hold a joist in place
• Temperature resistance: effective from -30°C to +80°C - the full range of Polish weather conditions
• Moisture resistance: does not lose adhesion from water, rain, or dew
• UV resistance: does not degrade in sunlight

The tape is applied to the underside of the joist along its full length. After pressing it against a clean, dry surface, it forms a durable bond that can nonetheless be removed during deliberate disassembly.

Pillar 2: The system's own weight

A finished composite floor on joists weighs 12 - 18 kg per square metre. On a 6 m2 balcony, that is around 72 - 108 kg of evenly distributed weight pressing the joists against the surface.

Think of it this way: the tape holds the joists in place, and the entire weight of the panels, clips, and the joists themselves additionally presses the system down. The more panels, the more stable the whole structure sits. It is a solution that becomes more stable as more elements are added.

Pillar 3: Locking clips

Composite panels are attached to the joists using mounting clips. The clips connect the panels to the joists and simultaneously connect the panels to each other - forming a rigid, integrated slab.

The result? A single panel can be lifted. But the entire floor - 20, 30, 40 panels connected by clips on a joist grid - forms a monolithic structure that cannot be accidentally shifted.

"Tape won't hold" - debunking the myth

The most common doubt: "Surely tape cannot hold a floor". It sounds reasonable - after all, tape is associated with something temporary. But that intuition is wrong. Here is why.

The tape does not need to support the full weight

The key misconception is that people think the tape has to "carry" the floor. It does not - the floor rests on the surface. The tape only needs to prevent the joists from shifting horizontally. And that is a completely different load than holding something vertically.

Horizontal forces acting on balcony flooring are minimal:

• Walking: the friction of a foot on a panel acts vertically (downward pressure) with minimal horizontal force
• Moving furniture: a chair sliding across a panel generates force, but it is distributed across the entire floor surface
• Wind: the floor is too heavy for wind to shift it (more on this below)

Mounting tape with adhesion strength of several dozen kilograms per linear metre comfortably covers all of these forces.

An analogy: a rug on the floor

Think of a heavy rug in the living room. It is not screwed to the floor, yet it does not slide during everyday use. Composite flooring on a balcony works on the same principle - except it is significantly heavier than a rug and additionally bonded to the surface with tape. If a rug stays put on its own, flooring with tape will certainly hold even better.

Wind resistance

Balconies on higher floors (5+) are exposed to strong wind. Can flooring without anchoring be "blown away"?

In short: no. Here is the calculation.

Composite flooring on joists weighs around 15 kg/m2. On a 6 m2 balcony, that is 90 kg. To lift that mass, wind force would need to act from below - but the panels rest on the surface, not sticking out like sails. Wind can blow between the gaps, but the lifting force is negligible compared to the weight of the system.

Additional safeguards:

• Clips join the panels into a rigid slab - wind cannot lift a single board
• Tape holds the joists on the surface - even if any lifting forces appeared, the tape neutralises them
• Geometry - the floor is flat and flush with the surface, with no "grip point" for the wind

1. Measurement - LiDAR scan of the balcony (free, millimetre accuracy)
2. Design - joist and panel layout in a computer simulator
3. CNC cutting - every element machine-cut to the balcony's dimensions
4. Surface preparation - cleaning and degreasing the surface
5. Bonding joists - tape on the underside of the joist, pressed against the surface
6. Installing starter clips - on each joist along the first row line
7. Laying panels - row by row, with joining clips between boards
8. Clips at joints - where panels meet along a row
9. Inspection - checking level, stability, and expansion gaps
