Balcony in winter - the biggest concerns

A Polish winter is a real test for any building material. Temperatures dropping to -20°C, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, snow sitting for weeks, followed by sudden thaws with heavy rain.

No wonder many people ask: will my balcony floor survive the winter? The answer depends on the material. For composite panels, it is short and simple: yes, without any issues.

Why does frost damage traditional materials?

To understand why composite handles frost so well, it helps to know what actually damages other materials:

Wood

Wood is hygroscopic - it absorbs and releases moisture from the environment. When water in the wood pores freezes, it expands by about 9%. This tears the structure apart from within. The visible effects include:

Ceramic tiles

The tiles themselves are frost-proof, but grout and adhesive are not always. Water seeps into the joints, freezes, and gradually breaks the grout apart. After a few winters, joints crack, water gets under the tiles, and they start to drum and fall off.

Composite panels and frost - technical data

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) panels have a fundamentally different structure to wood or ceramics:

Parameter Composite panels Exotic hardwood
Water absorption < 1% 15 - 25%
Freeze-thaw cycle resistance No change after 500+ cycles Degradation after 50 - 100 cycles
Thermal deformation Controlled linear expansion Uncontrolled swelling and shrinking
Mould / fungi No growth medium Develops in damp conditions

The key number: water absorption below 1%. Since the panel does not absorb water, there is nothing to freeze. No freezing water = no cracks, deformation, or degradation.

What about snow on the panels?

Snow resting on composite panels poses no threat whatsoever. But a few things are worth knowing:

Winter installation - does it make sense?

Yes! At BalkonSetup we install all year round, regardless of the temperature. Composite panels do not require gluing or grouting - clip-based installation works in any conditions.

What is more, winter is the off-season - fewer orders mean shorter waiting times for your installation date.

One note: When installing in low temperatures (below 5°C), we leave slightly wider expansion gaps because the panels will expand in summer. Our simulator automatically accounts for this in the calculation.

Winter maintenance - or rather, the lack of it

One of the biggest advantages of composite panels is that they require absolutely no winter preparation. Compare this with wood:

Task Composite panels Exotic hardwood
Pre-winter preparation Nothing Protective oiling (autumn)
During winter Nothing Avoid accumulated snow
After winter Wash with water (optional) Sanding + re-oiling

Spring clean-up

After winter, simply wash the panels with a pressure washer (up to 100 bar) or just a bucket of water and a broom. That is all. The panels will look exactly the same as they did before winter.

Summary: winter is not a problem

Composite panels are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. In Poland - with our freezing winters, damp springs, and hot summers - this is a material that truly delivers. No maintenance, no stress before the first frost, no cracks in spring.
